Before us was the black, flat, steaming plain of the Kilauea crater floor. Beyond it, and partially concealed by the immense slope of Mauna Loa, a menacing thunderhead crackled.

We were at the head of a three mile trail across the crater floor toward the cliffs in the background. We were debating how far to proceed across the bizarre steaming landscape when some subtle change in groundwater circulation caused the smell and taste of sulfur and sulfuric acid emanating from the many fumeroles to increase, sending us back to the car for a drive to fresher air. I'd love to go back. It would be an interesting hike in an inherently hazardous place.
